Bexar Hugs
Bexar Hugs Auxiliary of Assistance LeagueŽ of San Antonio members are primarily women who work outside their home during the day and volunteer during the evenings and on Saturdays. The Auxiliary was founded in 1994 and certified by National Assistance League in 1995. Each member volunteers a minimum of 30 service hours per year to support the work of the Assistance League through their service and financial contributions.
Major program support is offered for Operation School BellŽ through the assembling of school boxes and personal care kits for elementary school children. The "I Love You Dolls" is an Auxiliary program which provides stuffed dolls to hospitals for use as a teaching tool or comfort item for small children. Doctors place bandages on the dolls to show a child the wounds he will have following surgery; thus, helping the child better understand the pending medical procedure. Financial support is offered to the Togs for Tots program, as well.
Additionally, Bexar Hugs members staff the Thrift House on the fifth Saturday of the month, dress students for Operation School Bell on the first Friday of the month, and work side by side with members on other Assistance League projects.
Meetings are held at the Thrift House, 2611 West Avenue, on the second Tuesday of each month, except July. A social hour begins at 5:30 pm, followed by a business meeting at 6:15 pm. Generally, after each business meeting, members work on Bexar Hugs Auxiliary programs. For additional information, call (210) 732-1200.
